Standard Sao Vicente - wer war schon dort?

Hallo zusammen,

Danke

Standard Independent reports Sao Vicente

Hi Dany,
I would be very surprised if you get any response on this forum.

Why?
1. Sao Vicente is largely undiscovered. On a busy day we have 4 kiters on the water! (we like it that way )
2. So we don’t get a lot of guests on Sao Vicente. Moreover only very few have come from German speaking countries (my best guess is about 15 over the past 3 years we have been here !!!, mostly from Switzerland and Austria).
3. On top of that, only a minority of our guests use kitesurf forum sites on a regular basis.

But… amazingly, some reports have been written (by the way, this is not a selection of only good reports, these are simply all of the independent reports written).

In English (and French), kitesurfers from the USA, UK, Netherlands, Austria, Slovenia and France
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attract...o_Vicente.html

In Dutch, two reports by kitesurfers from the Netherlands
http://wvzandvoort.nl/2011/12/wvz-ki...p-cape-verdie/ (pictures 9-16)
http://www.wouterdewinter.nl/sport/k...p-sao-vincente

In French, a report by a kitesurfer from France
http://www.kitesurf.fr/viewtopic_25150.html

In Dutch, report by a kitesurfer from Belgium
http://kitesurfen.all-forum.net/t145...-salamansa-bay

So nothing in German, but we would be super delighted with a first independent Germany report !!

Hi,

@Ola, do you have the electric bikes for rent we were talking about?

Standard Sharks in Sao Vicente

For sure we have all sorts of sharks in the waters of Sao Vicente (same for all Cape Verde islands).

And indeed, you need a healthy dose of awareness and should not take unnecessary risks:
  1. don't go in the water after rain
  2. don't go on the water after dark
  3. don't throw fresh bloody meat in the water and swim between the pieces in an area known to be the breeding area for sharks !!

We have a lot of divers (not only tourists but also locals who go spear-fishing), so if there is a big danger you'd expect some attacks.

So what is more important: how many attacks have we seen in Cape Verde ?:

See: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks...k/mapafric.htm

So the answer: 1 attack (unfortunately, fatal) in the period for the beginning of recordings to date.

The one attack was a diver doing point 3 at a remote rock island known to be the breeding area of sharks.

Hi Arum,

You are totally right : we advice not to kitesurf at Sao Pedro for 2 reasons:
- wind is offshore
- the kite on the beach (sometimes has a lagoon) can interfere with the airport radar.

Only on some very rare occasions, we take advanced riders to Sao Pedro upon their insistence, but we only do so, making sure to get on the sea water fast and having a rescue boat ready.
But honestly: it should not be necessary to go kiting there. The main spot Salamansa is far better and safer.

Cool

Well... I guess ola454 knows what he's talking about. Nevertheless, spent one week in Sao Pedro around Easter 2011 with some friends there and really liked the place. Found great conditions every day, but indeed you better have a boat there. Went to a neighbouring (uninhabited) island

http://www.offshoreodysseys.com/potw/?potw_id=78

which is just a stunning place. Sao Vicente rocks!!!

Hi Funkite!

Yes, we do have 3 e-mountain bikes on the island!
They are the HaiBike ones, one with full suspension, the other with front suspension and the other front suspension, 29 wheel size.
They have GPS so you can find your way on your own. We programmed them with 3 routes all exploring the Sao Vicente country-side with magnificent views. We provide extra battery, cycling trousers and everything else you would need to make a tour.

Cheers.
Ola

Standard Sao Vicente, Salamansa

Hallo Leute

cheers

@Bballer:

Hi how is it going with you?

We are fine and ready for a 4th season at Sao Vicente. We expect it to be busier this year but with help of local authorities try to keep the place special (target is maximum of 18 kiters on the water).
We are having more fun with the business because we now offer all the services to clients: help with finding flights, an accommodation service etc. It's more rewarding to help customers with all the challenges to get here and to find a place to sleep.

The school building will change, with new construction to start in December. We'll have a proper place to eat, larger area to chill out, a space for changing, toilets etc.

For the sharks: we see them on a regular basis, we even hit them with our boards on 3 occasions !! but they seem to be asleep and more scared of us !

After being here for 3 seasons, the wind pattern is becoming more clear.

In general:
- season starts mid-October and end ends end-June
- during that time we get >90% of days with good wind
- the wind blows the same direction NE NNE day and night
- at the main spot, Salamansa, the most common wind is 16-18 knots

More details:
- if the wind goes down, it usually lasts 2-4 days
- this usually happens when there are a lot of clouds

Exceptions:
- During winters with a global weather pattern change, specifically La Nina, the the the chance of wind is reduced, typical wind strength goes down and the periods of the wind being down lasts longer. By the way: according to the experts, we will not get La Nina this season.
